SAN DIEGO, Calif. — October 29, 2026. Drivers who normally travel south on Interstate 5 and connect to eastbound State Route 52 should plan an alternate route on two nights. Caltrans District 11 announced that the southbound I-5 to eastbound SR-52 connector will close for roadwork on Thursday, October 29, and Sunday, November 8, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following mornings.
Which ramp is affected?
The closure applies specifically to the connector taking southbound I-5 traffic onto eastbound SR-52. It does not mean that the entire Interstate 5 or the entire State Route 52 will be closed. Drivers heading toward communities served by eastbound SR-52 should avoid assuming their usual direct ramp will be available during the work windows.
Caltrans’ announced detour
- Continue south on I-5 to the Clairemont Drive off-ramp.
- Turn left onto Clairemont Drive.
- Turn left onto northbound I-5.
- Take the northbound I-5 connector to eastbound SR-52.
That is the route specified in the October 29 Caltrans announcement. Drivers should follow posted signs and traffic-control personnel if conditions differ from the published plan.
What drivers should know before leaving
Caltrans says work dates and times may change because of weather, traffic incidents or other construction circumstances. The two scheduled nights are October 29–30 and November 8–9; the 5 a.m. end time belongs to the following calendar day. These are planned closures, not confirmation that work is underway at every minute of those windows.
Travelers can check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before departing to see the latest lane restrictions and incidents. Expect workers and equipment in the construction zone, obey the posted speed limit and allow for a possible detour delay. Caltrans did not publish a guaranteed extra travel-time figure in this notice.
