SAN DIEGO, Calif. — November 3, 2026. Mara Elliott, who served as San Diego City Attorney, is the Democratic candidate for California Senate District 40 in the November 3 general election. Republican Kristie Bruce-Lane is her opponent in a contest to replace termed-out Senator Brian Jones.
A legal career enters a wider district
Elliott’s campaign draws on her work as a city attorney to discuss consumer protections, public safety, civil rights and accountability. Her published priorities include reducing costs for housing, health care and everyday necessities. These are candidate positions, not confirmed policy outcomes if she is elected.
Why District 40 is broader than San Diego city
District 40 includes San Marcos, Escondido, Poway, Santee, northern San Diego neighborhoods and nearby unincorporated communities such as Fallbrook and Ramona. NBC 7 San Diego identified housing, electricity bills, insurance and homelessness among the topics shaping this contest. Bruce-Lane’s campaign also discusses affordability and public safety but proposes a different approach to government.
Voting appearance remains unverified
More of Elliott’s platform is available at maraelliott.com. California58 has not independently verified a November 3 social-media video or image of Elliott personally casting her ballot. Her individual voting site and time remain unconfirmed, and no election result is asserted.
