PACIFIC BEACH, SAN DIEGO — November 7, 2026. A 49-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting death of security guard Luis Alberto Quiroz-Arreola, 31, who was killed while working at Crystal Pier on October 5.

What happened in court?

Brian Mathew McColley appeared for arraignment Friday, November 6. Prosecutors said the case includes additional accusations related to weapons and drugs. A not-guilty plea means the allegations must be proven in court; the defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted.

Investigation and arrest

Police say Quiroz-Arreola was shot shortly after 2 a.m. while working at the pier on Ocean Boulevard. Employees of a nearby business attempted first aid before emergency crews arrived, but he died after being taken to a hospital. Investigators arrested McColley in El Cajon on November 3. Authorities have not established a motive in their public statements.

What is next?

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 7, according to the November 6 court report. Police continue to seek witnesses or other information. San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit can be reached at 619-531-2293 and Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
