SAN DIEGO — October 26, 2026. A new appeal by California’s governor has drawn statewide attention to an unsolved homicide in San Diego. The October 23 announcement covers multiple cases across six counties and says rewards are available for qualifying information leading to an arrest and conviction. This report concerns a renewed appeal, not a new crime committed this week.
What authorities have confirmed about Darnell Smith
Darnell Smith, 20, was killed in 2008 in San Diego’s Emerald Hills neighborhood, according to California’s October 23 public-safety announcement. The release says Smith had been walking toward a family member’s home near Pyramid Street when a person emerged from a black SUV and shot him. He was a Mesa College student and worked for Cox Cable.
The state also notes previously announced separate offers of $1,000 from San Diego Crime Stoppers and $2,500 from Cox Communications. The governor’s announcement does not claim that any suspect has now been charged in the case. Tips may also be submitted anonymously through San Diego County Crime Stoppers.
How to submit information
Anyone who may have relevant facts can contact the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293. In an emergency, call 911 instead of using an investigative tip line. People should not attempt to investigate independently, approach anyone they suspect, or publicly circulate unverified allegations.
The $300,000 cited in the state announcement refers to the broader group of unsolved investigations; it is not necessarily a reward amount applicable to every individual tip. Conditions of eligibility and whether information qualifies for a reward are decided under the official program’s rules.
